実際の物理現象とか化学の現象（他にも社会現象・・・）などを数理的に模すことをシミュレーションするという。
定常的な現象、時間依存の非定常的現象、周期的現象をシミュレーションすることが、その先にある様々な状態量を推測するのに有用とされている。
ここで大学などで行われているシミュレーションに提言を示す。現象を十分再現できるモデルが構築されていて、シミュレーションに精度があるなら、実実験と同じ時間でシミュレーションも解を出すことになるということである。
周期的な現象を表すのに数周期計算してみて、実現象を表しているかというと疑問があり、実現象がそのぐらいで安定な周期状態になるなら良いが、過渡的な状態にある場合、解が別に存在する可能性の方が高い。
計算時間が実現象に比べて短い場合、このことを考慮しなくてはならない。例えば渦巻きポンプの例では、インぺラーが回転し始めて数秒してから安定的な状態に実現象はなる。シミュレーションでも同じ事で、そのシミュレーションが実現象をよく表しているなら、同じことが計算されるはずである。
スペクトルなども本当に実現象でサンプリングする時間を考慮して、同じ時間の計算解を使って算出しているかなど疑わしい。
また、全ての現象を一度にシミュレーションすることが難しいので、注目する現象のみに絞った解を求めることも一種のシミュレーションであり、このことでより現象を説明する・説得力のある結果を示すことが出来る。
スペクトルなどは、高周波成分は捨てて、人間が感知できる周波数帯を計算するとか、もっとレンジの長い現象に絞ったシュミュレーションでは数値的な精度は捨てて、全体的数値傾向を見ることに専念するとかもシミュレーションといえる。
